Abstract Painting

Goal: Students will learn about the purpose of abstract painting, how to appreciate the technique, and how to create a simple composition using simple shapes (geometric and organic).

Why: students will learn how to appreciate abstract art, what mediums are used, and how to understand composition...which is the most important part of abstract painting.

Homework: Research three artists who specialize in abstract painting, write about in your sketchbook.

Summary: students will learn how to create an abstract painting using geometric and organic shapes. Students will learn about color blending, variety of painting techniques, composition, movement, and form. Images should flow in a movement that takes the eye around an image. Paintings should be split into three separate images.

Process:

1. Find three artists who specialize in abstract painting, print off three paintings, glue in sketchbook and write about each one.
2. In sketchbook begin playing with geometric and organic shapes. Use colored pencil to color in the images. Think about creating movement in your pieces. You must draw on three images, with forms moving onto the other image.
3. Practice painting techniques such as blending with the different brushes. Practice in sketchbook using tempra paint. Make five rectangles that contain practices of blending colors together so that there is little transition.
4. Once you have mastered painting techniques, let's move on the painting on wood. You will be provided wooden squares or rectangles to paint on but use acrylic paint. You will need three pieces of wood.
5. Start painting!!
